About Us:
In 1950, Engelman & Company began as a family neighborhood real estate and management company in Greenwich Village. An organization called Sailor Snug Harbor owned much of the land in the Village, using it to provide homes for retired sea captains. The land could not be sold, only leased, due to deed restrictions dating back hundreds of years. Howard Engelman was one of the first real estate developers to obtain financing and build apartment buildings on what was believed to be properties with permanent ground leases. The Engelmans and their partners started out with the development of 2 six story apartment buildings, 50 and 54 East 8th Street. From there, they focused on expanding across to 9th Street, with the development of 30 and 60 East 9th Street. 40 and 55 East 9th street followed in the early 60's.
Engelman & Company continues to be a family run real estate business, serving the needs of buyers, sellers, & renters in New York City.
